The Great Parade

The most spectacular event of Perugia1416 is usually one of the challenges that the five Rioni face for the award of the Palio. To participate in the Great Parade you must be enrolled in a district, and re-enter the choreography established by the same, in compliance with the stylistic canons established.

The homage to Braccio

THE STAKE OF HONOR AT THE BRACCIO FORTEBRACCI BARRACKS

In the past years, along the descent from Cassero, in the Rione Sant’Angelo, Braccio and his army on their way to meet the Priors stop at the Braccio Fortebracci Barracks, where the Commander of the “Umbria” Army Military Command used to honor the great Condottiero who gives name to the Barracks (and to the square below which the University for Foreigners overlooks) by participating in the Perugia1416 event in an official and touching ceremony of honor picket. A ceremony that symbolically unites past and present in the name of Braccio: Suspended due to security restrictions, it will hopefully return in the future.

PERUGIA NATURAL STAGE

The great historical parade, the highlight of Perugia 1416, celebrates the triumphal entry into Perugia of Braccio Fortebracci da Montone following his victory in the battle of Sant’Egidio. An event which ideally symbolizes the passage in Perugia from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance and the beginning of the power of Braccio over the city.
Reliving it, means recovering the ancient unity between the city, the Rioni (districts) and the countryside, reviving our roots, feeling part of a story that reaches down to our days. The absolute protagonists are the five districts, each represented in all its various aspects and characters: nobles, magistrates, representatives and artisans of the middle class, lower classes and peasants.
Each local procession starts from its own district, and all converge up to the center and then parade along Corso Vannucci reaching the Piazza to honor the new lord. Hundreds of neighborhoods in historical dress participate, followed by guest delegations. The organization of the parade is due to the artistic coordinator and the contribution of wards, civil protection men, policemen and various collaborators. Perugia1416 is grateful to everyone.
In the 2020 and 2021 editions, due to the health emergency and compliance with safety standards, the prize was not awarded because neither the great historical parade nor the sporting challenges took place. Symbolically, the Palio was donated once to the city of Perugia and once to the economic operators of the center of Perugia. In 2022, after these two difficult years, it has been decided that Parade will not be in scoring. In 2023 the parade will have full points

Altera Effigies. Perugia 1416 behind the scenes

ALTERA EFFIGIES

It is a special, different photographic exhibition.

The beauty of the costumes of the historical re-enactment, the characterizations, the great procession naturally attract photographs of beauty. But Altera Effigies, launched in 2019, has allowed many photographers, professionals or improvised, to go and look for those informal moments, even prying ones, at times, invisible to most. Shots that reveal the human and spontaneous side, outside the official nature, of figures proud of that dress that sets them down in history, but characterized by the irony of the moment. A light exhibition, because even lightness knows how to have weight and dignity but also knows how to make a smile. An ironic exhibition, because self-irony is a value. We thank the photographers who took the shots and all those who, even in moments of relaxation, found themselves actors and authors of a dream.

Scenography between 1400 and 1450

THE CHALLENGE OF THE HISTORICAL COURT

The historical period of reference for the clothes and the scenography is between 1400 and 1450.
The evaluation is based on three different criteria:

  • Historical relevance
  • Interpretation
  • Scenography

Historical relevance

Means the likelihood of the historical exposure. The jury will have to evaluate in particular whether the costumes, contents, facts and theme chosen by the individual districts are plausible with respect to the reference period, reward any use of local historical sources used in creating the staging, and must also evaluate if the proposal is related to the geographical area of reference, in this case Perugia and its countryside in 1416.

Interpretation

Means the ability to bring the procession to life through the bearing, the choreographic movements, the differentiated characterization of the various characters, the adherence of the comments elaborated by the districts and the exposure of the individual commentators.

Scenography

It concerns all the symbols, allegories and light scenographic materials that can be worn during the parade. Any wagons must be exclusively human-powered. Animals are also part of this section, with the exception of large quadrupeds. Only: dogs (only if kept on a leash), birds of prey tied to the falconers’ arms, animals from the poultry farm of the time and rabbits (only if welcomed in special wooden cages) are allowed. The use and treatment of each individual animal will be carried out in accordance with current regulations.
